James Johnston Obituary

James Whittles Johnston

1953 ~ 2025

James Whittles Johnston, at age 72, passed from Earth to Eternity on Easter Sunday, 20 April 2025. Jamey was surrounded by his wife Catherine and their children. Their endless love and devotion to him was extraordinary.

Jamey was born at Queen Charlotte Hospital in London, England on 28 January 1953. Upon returning to Colorado, he was raised between Denver and Aspen, Colorado.

He was an active boy and involved with his horse, performed in Summer Stock and spent endless hours with his cousin Pam exploring the outdoors of Aspen.

Jamey came to Utah for business. In doing so he met Catherine, they married, and he automatically inherited a large family. Jamey always said, “He had won the Lottery,” with Kaira, Bridgit, Ricky, Christian, Alexis, LeGrand and Mary. Always wanting a large family and with a couple of add-ons he got his wish and was equally devoted to them all.

Jamey’s work through the years took him to places around the world. Saudi Arabia, the Aish Ha Torah school in Jerusalem, London, England working with Peregrine Churchill on the Churchill Family Trust, Abraham Lincoln Association with the Springfield, Illinois State Historian, Tom Schwartz. We were given the unbelievable privilege of holding the Gettysburg Address in our hands as well as the deed of purchase for Commerce, Illinois, signed by Joseph Smith Jr.

Throughout Jamey’s life, his interests were scholarly and led to many thoughtful and lively discussions. He had an eclectic interest in most everything, but music was standout. From the Tabernacle Choir to the Traveling Wilburys (George Harrison, Bob Dillon, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynn and Roy Orbison (the voice).

He loved baseball and thoroughly enjoyed watching his grandson, Sean play, coached by his dad, Bill. Then the next generation, Sean and Bill coach Tate (great grandson).

He was a patriot and loved America. His involvement with the George Washington Foundation was a high point in his life. He was a member of the Sons of The Utah Pioneers and enjoyed and loved his association with these dedicated and terrific men.

When Jamey had converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he never looked back. He would often like to semi quote John Taylor and tell people, “When you know it’s true, you have no other choice. You cannot deny the Holy Ghost.” Some of his greatest talents and traits were charitable service to all, ability to resolve issues with good cheer, forgive without rancor and carry illness without complaint.

He loved serving as a Temple Ordinance Worker in the Mount Timpanogos Temple and so loved his Temple Family (friends). For over a decade he served honorably. It truly became a school of learning for him. His love of the Temple was strong and was evident when making appointments to do Baptisms and Confirmations with his grandchildren from Payson to Brigham City. Then to Maddox’s for lunch or dinner.

Jamey has left a legacy of dedication, his service was varied, and he performed his duties with honor, integrity and love. He especially loved the Young Adults at Brigham Young University.

His testimony of Jesus Christ was paramount, as was his love of Catherine and his large family. Eighteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Tate, Cole, Jack, Taysom, Sutton and Zella. They were a bonus!

As family and friends, we mourn, but we also rejoice that he has completed his earthly life. As with everything…...Jamey did it with panache.

Easter morning must have been glorious for him!

Till we meet again.
